Cohesive gel implants are the latest implant to hit the U.S. market. The more time goes by, the more this implant increases in popularity. Commonly referred to as the "Gummy Bear Breast Implant", this new implant is not so new: it has been used extensively around the world for almost twenty years. It's only in the United States that these implants are currently banned for unrestricted use.
The FDA is currently performing a clinical trial on cohesive gel implants. The focus is primarily to find out if they are safe for public use. The trial could take fifteen to twenty years before completion. If the FDA finds the implants are relatively safe for human use, then they will grant them unrestricted use in breast augmentation surgeries. However, until the time the FDA approves them, the only option to have them for a woman in the United States is to join the clinical trial program.
To join the clinical trial, you will need to find a list of approved breast augmentation surgeons from the FDA's website. Then you'll need to contact one and apply to become a part of the trial. Only a small percentage of women are accepted into the program. But if you are accepted, more than likely your surgery costs will be reimbursed. However, you will have to agree to at least ten years of follow up visits with your surgeon.
Cohesive gel implants are only available in one shape: anatomical. The implant is pre-shaped like a real breast, sloping gradually from the top down to the bottom. The reason why cohesive gel implants are anatomical is because the gel is in solid form; it does not move from one portion of the implant to the other. Because it doesn't move, it must be pre-formed to look like a real breast. If the implant was perfectly round, it would always stay round, even if the woman was standing, laying on her side, or even hanging upside down!
The primary drawback to an anatomically shaped cohesive implant is that the implant always maintains its shape, regardless of the woman's bodily position. Of course, personal opinion matters most on whether anatomical is good or not. If you want your breasts to always appear as if they are in perfect form and immune to gravity, then anatomical is a good thing!
When it comes to leakage, a woman doesn't have to worry too much about cohesive gel implants. The implant is a solid mass of gel; it doesn't contain any liquid whatsoever. You can stab them, slice them, or smash them with a sledgehammer and they will not leak any type of liquid because there isn't any liquid to leak! Many people believe this new Gummy Bear breast implant is the future of breast implants because early evidence suggests they are impervious to a lot of the complications that are associated with silicone gel and saline breast implants.
The future is looking pretty bright for cohesive gel implants. Despite the fact that they are not yet approved by the FDA, they continue to rise in popularity. Someday in the not so distant future, women who live in the United States will be able to choose these implants for their breast augmentation surgery.
