The history of Kuhn Rikon
The village of Rikon im Tösstal, which is situated in the canton of Zurich, Switzerland within the municipality of Zell, witnessed the birth of the Industrial Age in 1819 in the Töss Valley when a spinning mill was constructed in the area. Eighty years later, the Rykon Mill was converted to a metalworking and the Kindlimann brothers began manufacturing copper cookware when they hired a tinsmith to help them manufacture their products. It would be another 27 years before Heinrich Kuhn would eventually purchase the factory which was manufacturing copper and steel at that time.
With the advent of electric stoves in 1927, Kuhn would have to adapt his cookware in order for it to be used with this new cooking technology. He would go on to develop a type of cookware that would work with this new technology and then 22 years later, he would introduce the Duromatic pressure cooker to the culinary industry, and during the 1950’s and 1960’s, the brand name would become synonymous with pressure cookers worldwide. It was at this point in time that the company would expand into the international market when Kuhn Rikon began exporting their products.
The company celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1975 and 12 years later, Kuhn Rikon would become the first manufacture of consumer goods in Switzerland to receive the SQS Quality Certificate which was awarded to the company by the Swiss Association for Quality Assurance. When Kuhn Rikon established their Enfield, Connecticut subsidiary in 1988, they expanded their global presence by setting up shop in the US market. Eight years later, the company would celebrate its 70th anniversary.
Over the past twenty some odd years, Kuhn Rikon would relocate its headquarters to the west coast of the United States after setting numerous sales records in the country with its Duromatic Pressure Cooker. In 2006, the company celebrated its 80th year in business by erecting a museum to honor the evolution of cooking. In 2008, Kuhn Rikon celebrated its 20th year in business in the US.
