Vehicle lifting techniques to enhance your off-road experience
Enhance Your
Off road Experience with Vehicle Lifting techniques
Some of the
vehicles specifically designed for off roads are able to effectively handle
mud, unpaved and rocky terrain, riverbeds sand and gravel. Modifying or
installing suspension lift kits in the existing model can help enhance the
vehicles on road performance and allows you to access even more difficult
terrains. Heavy duty trucks, SUVs, mountain bikes, ATVs, motorcycles and
snowmobiles can be modified efficiently with the help from body lists, truck
lift kits, suspension lifts, traction control and upgrading tires.
But before
actually going in for these upgrading kits, there are a few points to keep in
mind that will help you get the best for your vehicle to conquer the roughest
terrain.
Assess Your Vehicle and Your Requirement
Different
requirements and vehicles need a variety of modifications. All terrain vehicles
differ in terms of size, mechanism, parts and components. Even the various SUVs
or other models of the same category have hundreds of manufacturers and models
that differ as per the mechanism and structure. You also need to evaluate your
off roading capabilities. If you are a
new driver, it is best to try out only easy to middle level terrains with no or
little modifications in your vehicle. With modifications such as skyjacker
suspensions you can take on more challenging roads. It is also better to make
the required modifications on a smaller scale than overhaul your vehicle in one
go. You need to have a balance between what is needed or require for off road
driving and what you are actually capable of doing. The prime consideration is
safety as off-roading is an extreme activity which involves risk. Before you
modify your ride it is best to know the terrain you want to ride on! Once you
access what is required, you can think over the various modifications that are
available and then judge your vehicle’s requirements.
Available Lifting Techniques
The most
desired modification for off road vehicles is enhancing the clearance from the
ground with vehicle lifts. Lifting the vehicle for gaining ground clearance
helps the vehicle go over bumpy and muddy roads without damaging the bottom
frame and reduces wear and tear of the vehicle. The most commonly available
vehicle lifts are installing large tires, suspension lifts and body lifts.
Body Lift: This is a cost effective way of
getting higher ground clearance with body on frame designs usually found in
pick up trucks and SUVs. The original points where the body on frame has been
mounted is replaced with bigger spacers which increases the vehicle height to
nearly an inch to 4 inches. Increasing the height with more than 4 inches makes
the vehicle unstable and toppling over is a major concern.
Unibody
vehicles cannot get body lifts done as the frame is part of the body. Older
model Jeep Cherokee are on such example.
Suspension Lift
In the
suspension lift, the automobiles springs, shocks, controlling arms and steering
linkage are enhanced for better ground clearance. The small parts in the
suspension are replaced with larger pieces that have similar mechanism and
design but larger in size. As it
requires labour intensive installation it is more expensive that getting a body
lift done. The suspension lift aids change in the driving system and dynamics
and requires better handling capabilities that the normal driver’s capabilities
on off road driving. So, this is good for more experienced off road drivers.
Some of the
best suspension lift modifications are:
·
Increased length of coil springs
·
Long pitman arms
·
Coil spacer blockers
·
Leaf spring spacer block
·
Long control arms
·
Bigger Portal axle
·
Long frontal spindle
·
Tuff Country suspension kit
·
Reverse leaf spring on the axle
·
Air bag spring replacements
Bigger size tires
Changing the
usual tires to larger sized ones is one of the easiest ways and is also cost
effective for ground clearing. The other advantages over other vehicle lifts
are that it helps all vehicles get higher ground clearance, including the axle
and differentials. However, it is not that after you get a vehicle lift you can
put in the largest tires available but with each vehicle lift kit are specific
guidelines on the maximum tire size you can fix in place of the original ones.
Sometimes, you
can get the tires changed yourself but in most cases, it is best to take the
help of a professional who is experienced with using special equipment and
these vehicles will also require a tuff country lift kit. In rare cases, you
might even have to go in for more modifications by cutting out the wheel arches
for more room to accommodate bigger tires.
Off-roaders
with years of experience generally use a combination of various vehicle lifting
techniques that increase the height of their vehicles by about 12 inches than
its usual height. But if you are a beginner, getting your vehicle lifted too
high may make it unstable as the centre of gravity shifts causing the vehicle
to topple faster. High skill is required by advanced off roaders to have
control over the vehicle that has lift kits installed.
Once you have enough experience in controlling the vehicle irrespective of its
height and dynamics, you can take the full enjoyment of the vehicle
modifications and off road experience.
