TREKKING
A variety of treks are available here. You can choose from full day treks, short walks up to the near by villages or monasteries and week long trans mountain treks thats would include walking and camping along with it. Some treks like trek from Lamayuru to Darcha, takes three weeks!
Popular trekking routes are : 10 day Markha valley trek, Stok Kangri climb that goes upto 11 days, Lamayuru- Padum which also takes equal amount of days. All of these pass the Zanskar range. Not very long back, the ranges between Indus and Shayok have become accessible for trekking. Ideal trekking period is from June to Mid October and Indus valley trek are undertaken in the month of May as well. Treks also happen in autumn like the Hemis-Markha-Padum trek which goes on until 13 days. Chaddar trek is one of the toughest treks here but requires a lot of arrangements and is one of the most exciting treks of the world.
RIVER RAFTING
Best stretch for rafting is on the Indus between Spituk to Saspol. With the help
of professional guides one can enjoy this white water rafting. As you cross Saspol, you will no more just need a guide, but you yourself will be required to be extremely skilled. From Spituk down upto Karu is easy and perfect for amateurs. People who are beginners can practice here.
Many choose rafting in the Indus over to trekking these days. Zanskar offers one of the most challenging rapids to conquer. The stretch between Padum and Nimo is very exciting. This expedition can take up to several days, where people can besides rafting, camp in the deserted lands. Prior training in rafting is a must if you choose this path. Proper preparations are needed in order to conduct this rafting trip.
MOUNTAIN CLIMBING
Foreigners like to climb the Nun-Kun massif spread across the Himalayan Range. The place gains popularity because of its availability from Kargil-Padum road. It also has the shortest walks from all the base camps.
There are in all 6 mountain peaks which are trekkable. Closest to Leh is Stok kangri which lies south to Leh. For most of the treks, the base camps is two days trek back to the village of Stok.
Stok Kangri is a popular peak and presents great possibilities of trekking. Peaks like Matho West, Kantaka, Gulap Khangri or the higher peaks between ranges 6700 m are Konglacha Peak.
